Only 3 Weeks After The Announcement Of The Acquisition Of Zip Phone, India-based email application Hiking has updated its Android App with a function Call Votes. When Hiking bought Y Combinator-backed Zip Phone, which allows users to make Wi-Fi calls active, CEO Kavin Bharti Mittal said it would allow the company to add free Voice Call, one of its features the most requested by users, much faster.

It's latest Android update means Hike managed to add a voice calling feature before Facebook belonging WhatsApp, which is important because WhatsApp is the most popular messaging App in India, with over 70 million active users per month, or about 10 % of its global user base.

WhatsApp has promised to add features voice calling in early 2015, but it is still unclear when exactly it will be available. A file recently spotted in the latest version of WhatsApp, however, indicates that the voice call, which is already available in Viber competitors, LINE, Facebook Messenger, and WeChat, in addition to hiking-may be coming soon.

The company said it will add voice using its Windows Phone and IOS apps at the end of this quarter. Android users account for over 90 % of hiking users.

Like other characteristics of hiking, including free SMS credits for featurephones, her voice calling feature is designed for efficient data since the data plans are relatively expensive in India. Hiking claims "our users can pack in a lot more minutes per MB when calling on Hike."

Hiking says it currently has over 35 million users, with 90 % currently residing in India. The company raised $ 86 million from Tiger Global and BSB, a joint venture between Bharti Group and Softbank in Japan.
